Amtrak train 19, the Crescent, negotiates the complicated track layout at Howell Junction in Atlanta. Normally, the Crescent isn’t here, but due to track maintenance work towards the south on this day, it is terminating in Atlanta. The train has dropped its passengers off at Atlanta Peachtree Station and is using the trackage at Howell to turn around and head back towards Peachtree Station so the train is positioned for a northbound departure at night to New York as train 20. Normally the train runs New York to New Orleans. The three tracks on the left are Norfolk Southern (ex-Southern Railway), the two on the right are CSX (ex-Western & Atlantic Railroad) and lead north across the ex-Southern to Kennesaw and beyond.
